Barack Obama asked the nation to believe that change can happen. On Jan. 20, he became our nation's 44th president and its first African-American president.

While Obama was breaking barriers on a national scale, many local African-Americans have made contributions and had successes in Rowan County.

The Post is providing brief biographical sketches that highlight these contributions in the fields of medicine, law enforcement, community service and education.
