Update 4:40 p.m.: Cause of death in murder

Candice Jo Drye

E-mail to a friend

Preliminary autopsy reports indicate Dr. David Boyd died of strangulation, according to Salisbury Police.

Salisbury Police have charged Candice Jo Drye, 23, with murder in the death of Salisbury dentist Dr. David Boyd.

Drye, of Mocksville, is being held without privilege of bond in the Rowan County Detention Center.

At a press conference, Salisbury Police Chief Mark Wilhelm said she was arrested about 10:30 last night.

Boyd was found dead in his home on Pine Tree Road in the Country Club area Thursday morning by one of his employees, who had gone to check on him when he did not come in to his office. Police found him bound by his hands and feet, lying in bed, dead.

Police and State Bureau of Investigation officers remained at the home throughout the day collecting and processing evidence.

Police say Drye and Boyd were “acquaintances,” but are releasing little other information about the case.

Boyd's wife, Dr. Kathleen Boyd, an endodontist, and their children were at the beach at the time and returned Thursday afternoon.

Police will not release a cause of death until preliminary autopsy reports are released from the Medical Examiner's Office in Charlotte.

Media is ruining lives... : Thursday, July 24, 2008 8:51 PM

What ever happened to respecting this family's privacy?? Within the first few days, the officers at the press conferences stated they did not want to release any "detailed" information to protect Dr. Boyd's wife and children. A few days into the investigation, you have access to all the negative information; for example you can look at the search warrants, view what they found, play by play of how things happened, even the raw 9-1-1 call. It amazes me how openly warped our media is today. I am truly astonished at all the information that is available to the public. This is surely one sick world.

First Amendment Rights : Monday, June 30, 2008 7:15 AM

I really didn't want to believe that people could be this cruel but again I'm proven wrong. If it were your family I wonder how you would feel about everyone elses First Amendment Rights? This along with several other "rights" are flagged by mostly people who are gossips and hate mongers! How about having your name drug through the mud along with the murderers; would you like that or for it to happen to your family? Who's rights are being violated when that happens? I am concerned about her children too but where were they while this crime was being committed? I don't care where you live... I don't care who you are... if you just live for someone elses pain then you are a sorry excuse for a human. I hope God has more mercy on you than you give those you are inflicting all your "opinions" on. Who really cares about your opinions anyway!? I've had family murdered... there was also a suicide involved. Maybe one day you will face the same thing and then we will see how it feels to have others "voicing their opinions" about your family; especially those people who would not know them if they were standing in front of them! I pray no one has to deal with this type of pain but as long as there are people, there will be crime and if you don't think it can happen to you then you are sadly mistaken. Before you voice your opinion you'd better be able to take the same criticism yourself if any unfortunate incident comes your way.

Respect for the Family : Sunday, June 29, 2008 3:51 PM

Several months ago my family was faced with a death which was very public...I can tell you from our experience - families do read the comments and they hurt more than you can imagine. As much as you try to ignore the comments of local residents, strangers to your family, people who didn't even know any more of the story that what was reported, late at night when you can't sleep those comments run thru your thoughts and haunt you. You want so bad to defend your loved one but it only fuels the fire. Send condolences but please think carefully before putting words into print via comments because they are hurtful. Dr. Boyd's family includes his wife, their children, parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and on. People who comment on situations they aren't immediately affected by....use your energy for neighborhood watches, for city & county council meetings, etc. Leave this family to grieve in peace without people making speculations. Take the time you are commenting to these articles and tell your husband, wife, children, family that you love them because no one is given a promise of tomorrow. God bless the family and give them the strength to get through the next few days, weeks, months always remembering someone so special to them.

Crime is everywhere : Sunday, June 29, 2008 10:07 AM

OH,its called being nosy" when crime happens in Country Club? Yeah right! Crime can happen any where and to anyone's family. It's just amazing how our small city care about these children, and their feelings. What about the other children in the past and their feelings? Since we know that they care, I hope they care if this happen in a lower classs neighborhood or if the victim is of a different race. "The truth is the light". Those who see what I see, watch as well as pray. Condolence to the Boyd family. My prayer goes out to the Drye family and the three innocent children.

In response to the question: "why all the "hats off" and "atta boys" to the police dept? she turned herself in. they didn't solve anything. they opened the door and let her in." Do you think this suspect just turned herself in without any quality investigative work revealing her and others as suspects in this case. Of course we tip our hats to the fine work of the Salisbury Police Dept. Also applaud them for the manner in which they held their information while the ongoing investigation was uncovering vital information to the case.

Freedom of Speech does NOT stop at emotions : Saturday, June 28, 2008 1:24 AM

Freedom of speech is not prohibited just because someones feelings are hurt. This murder is certainly a matter of public concern. It is important to Mr. Boyds patients, the neighbors and the comminity at large. Just because the questions and comments are not blunted or tweaked to be more sensitive does not invalidate them. These comments are more drama than in high school. : Friday, June 27, 2008 7:07 PM

You people call each other adults? Sure, people have the right to wonder how this murder happened. Why? Because we all live in this town and each of us worry about our own safety at times. To know if this event occurred because of personal issues, a robber, or just for no real reason at all is important to know and anyone should be allowed to wonder/ask questions. Of COURSE nobody wished this to happen. Of COURSE everyone feels for the family and wishes them best of luck. No one wants to put blame on anyone, they just want to know for the safety of their own family. The authorities may never truly know what happened that night... but honestly, how sad is it that people are yelling at other people for asking a question? As I said, my heart goes out to the family...coping with any death is never easy, especially in the family and for children. <3

it is hard to comprehend : Friday, June 27, 2008 4:52 PM

may i put my 2 cents in? i feel, as it seems like everyone one else is, am trying to understand this sad death. and if it's hard for us to comprehend we can only imagine how the family feels. the police & SBI will release details as they see fit & that is the way it will be. we all want justice even if it's for someone we don't even know. an acquaintance could very well mean a bank teller, a check out person at the grocery store or department store or even a childrens camp counselor. the fact is, a life was lost and a wife & 3 children are now without their husband & father. let us all bow our heads in prayer that Jesus will help them eventually find some relief from the pain of their loss and justice will be done.

Dr Boyd always remebered each child and was always great with them. What happened in his private life isn't really anyone's concern. Let it be. This will affect his children in more way than one for many years to come. He should be remembered as the kind man he was professionally and what kind of father he was to his children. Agree with MB : Friday, June 27, 2008 2:14 PM

This is a tragic situation no matter what, but it is exacerbated by insensitivity. The people writing whatever they want on this board and claiming "free speech" should research their constitutionally-protected freedoms, and remember the Boyd family. There are plenty of things you can't say publicly without repercussions, legal or otherwise. I'm certain we can all think of some. Further, our system of government in the U.S. in general is very protective of grieving families and victims. That people are bickering on this forum is regrettable, but that the Post is letting this continue (and sitting back and reaping the benefits) is also despicable. U.S. media has perpetuated the flawed notion that a "free press" means the public has the right to satisfy their curiousity and know everything all the time no matter what the cost, and, at times like this, the media just sits back and reaps the reward at the expense of the victims. I also notice some folks claiming free speech (or some variation thereof) are telling others to "shut up". Not only is that rude, it seems a little ironic.

And now you are having an arguement! If the public needed to know it would have been stated in the article above or at the press conference. No it doesn't matter how long or how well I know someone but just like you, when I have an opinion, I voice it. Fortunatly there are a few people in this town with some morals and dignity left in them (and I thank them for their support on this). Just like the person posted that agreed with me: "hug your children, love your spouse and thank God you are not the one that has to face this" and hopefully never will! There are too many people in this town that can't wait to run this in the ground just to have something to talk about. I comprehend very well what those post intended, this was little more than civil appropriate conversation in sheeps clothing digging for all the information they can get. Nosey : Friday, June 27, 2008 10:47 AM

The murder is big news for us, and though very sad, situations like this naturally invoke curiosity and a desire to learn the facts. Seems odd to me, though, that someone who "can't believe comments already starting about this" would make a comment. I think "MB" is just as nosey and disrespectful as the rest of us.

Be Respectful/Great Job Salisbury Police : Friday, June 27, 2008 10:39 AM

Please be respectful of the family during this time of loss. I am sure there will be more to come out on this at a later time but the children needs to be protected at this time. In regards to the police department, they have done a great job on this case and I must really praise Mark Wilhelm for doing what is need to protect the family at this most difficult time. We are very luck to have a Chief such as Mark!!! Great job my man!!!!

arrest : Friday, June 27, 2008 9:05 AM

I can't believe the comments already starting about this! Have you absolutly no respect for the family? You will know when the reports are released or the family wants you to know! Thats what it means! Be respectful and keep your nose in the paper and out of personal affairs that don't concern you! Why would you need to know other than just being nosey?
