Sloan honored as caregiver of the year for Home Instead

Beverly Sloan of Salisbury has been named Home Instead Senior Care's 2009 Caregiver of the Year for Rowan and Cabarrus counties.

Home Instead Senior Care provides nonmedical in-home care and companion service for seniors.

"Beverly has earned the respect and love of her clients, their families, her co-workers and office staff members," said Jena Hare, co-owner of Home Instead.

Sloan has been with the company since 2007, serving more than 3,000 hours working up to seven days a week, never turning down the opportunity to help a client. She has completed all Home Instead Senior Care training modules and furthered herself by recertifying as a CNA.

"Beverly is hard working, self-sacrificing, dedicated, genuine, compassionate, considerate, selfless, funny, caring, delightful and fun loving. She is further described as a happy spirit who epitomizes the compassionate caregiver. She does whatever is needed without being asked and knows how to adapt to any client or situation. She brightens your day and is who I want caring for my family member," Hare said.

Sloan said, "In the past, I have taken care of my mother, aunt and mother-in-law, in addition to being in the health care field years ago. After spending time in manufacturing, I am so glad to be back caring for people one-on-one. It is a blessing to me to be able to listen to my clients, give them encouragement and just talk to them so that they know someone really cares."

Originally from Salisbury and Spencer, she has four grown children, two who live nearby and twin boys in the military — one in Japan with the Air Force and one in Hawaii with the Navy; and four grandchildren.

She is a member of Dorsett Chapel in Spencer.

She will receive a day of pampering at Merle Norman, 1,000 reward points, her picture on a Home Instead Senior Care plaque that is kept in the office, and a clock.

She will also be submitted for consideration for the Regional Caregiver of the Year award. Eight regional winners will be candidates for the International Mary Steibel Caregiver of the Year award announced in Omaha at the company headquarters in the spring.
