Summertime concert: RCCA sponsors upcoming performance
E-mail to a friendThe Rowan County Concert Association will sponsor a performance in the auditorium of Salisbury High School, 500 Lincolnton Road, at 3 p.m. this Sunday. The public is invited to dress casually to enjoy an afternoon of music and refreshments. This is an extra concert, not part of the regular 2008-09 season. There will be a pre-show performance at 2:40 p.m., presenting Adam Broyles. This 14-year-old singer/songwriter was the winner recently of the children's division of "Salisbury's Got Talent," and also third overall in the contest. The master of ceremonies, Charles Nettles, will introduce The Music Makers led by Dr. Clyde Young with vocalist Libby Young, Jim Calabrese on sax and clarinet, Vick Tel on bass, Charlie Reese, piano, and Albert Stout, vocals. They plan to entertain with swing, dixieland and jazz, and with old favorites like "Stardust," "Satin Doll," "Mack the Knife," "Georgia on My Mind," and "What a Wonderful World." The Polka Dots polka band is a fairly new musical group here in town. They bring a wide variety of German, Czech and "Old Country" music, including the "Barbara Polka," "Skirt Waltz," "Beer Barrel Polka," "Clarinet Polka," "Die Lorelei," "Okey Dokey Polka" and more. The group consists of Lorna Brown, accordion; George Hill, cornet; Anne Cave, guitar, piano and vocals; John Cave, clarinet; Foster Owen, tuba; and Steve Etters, euphonium. The concert will conclude with Neal Wilkinson singing "God Bless America." Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 students 18 and under, and are available at Salisbury Belk, Rowan Visitor Center, Literary Book Post, FrostBites and at the door. A membership table will be available for those wishing to purchase their 2008-09 RCCA season ticket. Media sponsor for this concert is WSAT Memories 1280. The ad sponsor is Ben Mynatt NISSAN.
