Trucker hits trouble in neighborhood

I have lived in the Sedgefield Acres neighborhood for more than 20 years. I know about everyone that lives here, or at least I thought I did. There has been a so-called homeowners association for quite a while. Well, I was laid off by Freightliner about a year and a half ago, and I now drive a truck for a living.

The transition from going back to school and getting a job all carried through well until I came back home after being on the road for two weeks. To my surprise, I was greeted by the police. One of the residents had complained about my truck, minus the trailer, being parked on the street. I said, "OK, I can fix that." So I managed to park the truck in my driveway in front of my carport. I was reported to the police again for having a truck in my driveway. I was told I could park behind the house, but believe me, even if that were possible, I'm sure they would find another issue.

For some reason, we have been targeted by the association for some time now concerning having certain kinds of cars, motorcycles, you name it! We're a Christian family that has never bothered anyone. We have been victims of burglaries twice, but no one saw anything. I think they could have taken the house from its foundation and no one would have seen it! But it only took about 30 minutes to look up the street, see my truck and have the police there.

There are some good people here, but there are some who have nothing to do but cause havoc on working people. What happened to helping your neighbor when in need or looking out for one another?

Too many details

Regarding recycling in Rockwell:

The "rules" we received from our trash collector, Crash Morrison, were "clean, clean, clean," with no labels, rings or lids.

This was in addition to being instructed to separate paper and cardboard, bottles, steel cans (no pet food cans) and three different types of plastic bottles. All this using only one 18-gallon bin.

I am with Kathleen Harwood (July 16 letter). After working a full-time job and trying to maintain a household, I hardly have time for all the extra work of trying to recycle.

Nevermind being treated like a child in the process.

Mr. Morrison might get better cooperation from the citizens of Rockwell if he tried a little respect in his business.

Rockwell Recycing : Wednesday, July 23, 2008 9:53 AM

In defense of Ms. Harwood and Ms. Taylor, I must say that the recent change in recyclable collection in Rockwell has been a bit confusing. The first notice to residents about the change came in the Rockwell Town newsletter that was mailed in June. The article stated specifically all items that could and could not be recycled as well as how to prepare those items for recycling. In July, residents received a letter from the town that once again spelled out specifically the new recycling regulations. When the new recycling bins were delivered last week, there was a flier inside each one indicating that only a few items would be accepted, many less than were listed in the original information earlier given to residents. This mis-communication has caused much confusion, but according to Town officials, residents may recycle everything listed in the original mailings. For the sake of everyone who will handle your recyclables, it is a good policy to make sure everything you recycle is clean and if it takes a few seconds to remove a label, so be it. Whatever it takes to keep recyclable materials out of the landfill is worth it.

Sounds like you are indeed being targeted by some nosey neighbors with nothing els better to do. I would first check into whether your neighborhoods HOA is incorporated, if not, they have no room or reason for complaints and will not hold up in court. You didn't mention if you were having to pay HOA fees, if not, same as above. If your HOA holds meetings, I would go house to house and question each homeowner as to whether they had a problem with your truck and if not get them to sign a petition in your favor to take to the meeting and present it to the person in charge of your HOA. If the majority of the community does not have a problem with your truck in the driveway, smooth sailing. Good luck!

Maybe you can move? : Tuesday, July 22, 2008 7:51 PM

Maybe you can move to a better neighborhood reducing costs. Then rent your existing home. I understand a lot of Latino families are looking for a place to live and/or buy? Your neighbors sound like they would welcome them.

Rockwell Recycling : Tuesday, July 22, 2008 4:04 PM

If anyone would take the time to read the info sent from the Town they would know that you do not have to sort the recycling. You CAN if you want to do so. The recycling has to be cleaned before it will be accepted at the recycling center. And the lids and rings are not the same kind of plastic as the bottles.DUH! Also it seems obvious to anyone who actually stops to think the labels will have to be removed before the item is recycled. If this is all too much for you then the answer is simple.....DO NOT RECYCLE. Quit crying about it. Your previous garbage contractor just threw all of your stuff in the garbage......This is one of the main reasons the Town chose to switch so that your efforts in recycling go where they are intended to go!

Police Response : Tuesday, July 22, 2008 7:43 AM

Well, in defense of the police or deputies (whoever responded): they have no choice but to respond when a call comes in. If they choose not to respond, then they get in trouble. I think the real issue is why does Rowan County not have a law enforcement officer working in Communications to handle some of these calls? Better yet: why not let law enforcement officers be assigned as dispatchers for law enforcement instead of having civilians who know nothing of the law dispatching them to things that are not necessary (i.e. shots fired, "suspicious" person walking on the side of the road minding his own business, alarms)? The government is by NO MEANS an efficient operation. Too many chiefs and not enough indians. The structure of emergency services needs to be adjusted to perform more efficiently and safely.

homeowners ass. : Tuesday, July 22, 2008 6:30 AM

I think you have an issue to take up with the police department as well as the homeowners association. First of all they have no business what so ever coming out to enforce the laws, which believe me are not "laws" from a home owners association. Most people who have been in a neighborhood with an association do not even have any one in charge of it any more. Most realtos sold the property with that as a come on. They are no longer in charge, or have anything to do with the area. Wait on a summons from them, then see a layer. See one now about the police coming out.

Home Owners Associations : Tuesday, July 22, 2008 6:10 AM

I am sorry but this is a bit excessive. I understand you want to guard your property value but a man trying to make a living for his family by having a truck that he uses for work in his own driveway is WAY past any of their business. Before anyone says, well if they don't like it, they should just move, ask yourself if in this mortgage market, thats really an option right now? I am so sick and tired of these people like wanting their own little governments within their housing developments. Is his truck really such an eye sore and will diminish your house value? No, this is simply someone with their ideals of trucks drivers with motorcycles in their yard being beneath them and trying to make their development one where only the elite and priviledged(or so they think they are) can reside. I guess a laid off Freightliner worker driving truck to make a living isn't good enough to fit their mold so they will do everything they can to get them out and maybe an executive in there. By the way, shame on the police department for wasting valuable time harassing this man for something not illegal but is more of a civil manner.

It's not why were the police called--it's why did the police respond???? Don't they know to say that matter is a civil one?

Gladys Kravitz Lives! : Tuesday, July 22, 2008 4:17 AM

To Mr. Anderson, I can understand your frustration and I'm sorry you've been treated badly by someone in your neighborhood (probably just 1 or 2 individuals, not everybody.) Why were the police called in over a truck in the driveway? That's not a police issue as you weren't breaking any laws! Homeowners Association rules only cover issues not enforced by regular local laws. The homeowner's association can only take civil action due to an infraction if they're willing to pay the legal fees to take that action.
