A sad commentary on our government

Regarding the July 20 article "Business owner says illegal immigration costing local jobs":

What a sad commentary on the way our government treats its citizens. Ron Wetzler of Olympic Drywall and Texturing sees his 40 years of hard work slipping away because law enforcement will not enforce laws against illegal immigration.

Mr. Wetzler was betrayed first by his own trade association, and then by every law enforcement agency between a spineless sheriff and a spineless U.S. president.

Equally appalling, we read of research publications out of the University of North Carolina extolling the many virtues and benefits showered upon us by the hordes of illegal immigrants flooding our schools, jails, hospitals and labor market. North Carolina citizens, apparently, just don't recognize the blessings of illegal immigration.

The UNC faculty receives grant money to do research and then publish a lofty report on whatever conclusion a special interest group may be pushing — and is willing to pay for. If a special interest has a high-sounding name, plus a catchy acronym, and the grant money to go with it, we could possibly see an erudite research publication on the hitherto unrecognized benefits of cancer in North Carolina.

The Bush legacy

There are people who are counting down the days until President Bush leaves office. These people should prepare themselves to spend the next few years finding things Bush swept under the carpet.

President Bush has been financing the war by selling U.S. Treasury bonds to Japan and China. Billions of dollars worth. Yet he has American people thinking Mexican working in this country illegally are our biggest world problem after terrorism.

Despite Bush's poll numbers, he has a cult following that has people believing the president can charge a war on a credit card. The unfortunate thing is that all of them think that they can just rip up the credit card and the debt disappears.

This country has taken on the mentality of President Bush. Not to mention his karma.

George W. Bush was president of his college fraternity. His fraternity was accused of abusing pledges during hazing incidents. Bush was governor of Texas. He executed more people as governor than any other governor in history.

When he became president, it seemed inevitable that the country would end up with terrorists, war and torture.

This country acquired George Bush's persona. We need to start deprogramming now. And start learning about Asian culture.

My recollection is that it was a UNCC study about Light Rail in Charlotte from several months ago. It was unfairly biased to promote light rail. One always has to look at who paid for a study. You do remember, do you not, that years ago the tobacco companies would pay for a study to see if it was bad for your health. Want to guess what the studies said? Will post more on the UNCC study if possible.

I don't want to model my society after a society that inflicts forced abortions on families who choose to have more than one child. No thanks. I'll stick with America, land of the free and home of the brave.

Please cite the actual UNCC incident and other incidents where UNC system universities have tailored their findings to the whims of their funders. If this is true, it needs to be empirically proven. Hearsay is, of course, not valid.

There are a lot of nutty people out running around. Bush lovers, Bush haters, Anti everything, everybody, hate any one and anything that is not on your agenda. Ignore poverty, war, selling off of America, death of innocent people around the world, blaim all evils on some one other then those you support politically and religious leaders other then your own religious groups. People are certianly strange and pityful creatures, capable of such genius, kindness and creativity, instead choosing such hate, cruelty and prejudice. And we are supposed to be the most intelligent creatures on earth.

Universities lie, too. : Thursday, July 24, 2008 7:50 PM

Unfortunately Universities will stoop to biasing their "research" to please whowever is paying for it. Seems that I recall UNC Charlotte was guilty of doing this within the past year. The term "undocumented workers" seems to have originated from Universities willing to distort and mislead the public instead of using the more accurate term of illegal alien. Yes, even our univerisities are selling out for the dollars, and some citizens are gullible enough to believe their misleading and false statements.

Hancock has lot to learn : Thursday, July 24, 2008 7:39 PM

Lutrell Hancock apparently does not realize that the Democratic Congress has an approval rating below 10% that is even lower the President Bushing's rating. The current high price for gas can be laid at the feet of the Democrats in Congress that refuse to allow drilling for oil in much of our country, prefering instead to make us import oil from the likes of dictator Hugo Chavez and others of his ilk. The Democrats are working hard to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in Iraq. And what can we learn from Asia? Oh yes, we can learn to enslave our people as the Chinese have done as they have turned to communism. Or we can learn to kill millions of our citizens as Pal Pot did. Or kill millions in trying to conquor the world as the Japanese did. Or just what was it you had in mind regarding Asian culture? May I suggest, as someone already has, that the Asians learn about our culture where we have free elections, freedom of religion, fromdom of the press, the right to bear arms, and all the other rights in our consitition.

Lutrell Hancock : Thursday, July 24, 2008 6:02 PM

I couldn't have said it better! Well witten I must say. Unfortunately there are so many in this country that have bought into Bush's Latino scapegoating (and Dole's in NC), that articles like yours and a few others fall on deaf ears. I do beleive however that if we keep trying to educate people on the subject of immigration that so many have lost sight of, one day we may make progress. We may only change one mind at a time, but that's one less pointing fingers in the wrong direction! We will never change everyone's mind, some just can't see both sides (like not being able to see the forest for the trees). Everyone that wants all illegals out of the country will one day see as Pottsville, Iowa did when ICE arrested 389 employees at one meat packing plant (Pottsville only had a little over 2000 residents) that the economy will suffer just as their community has. Pottsville, Iowa (nor Arizona or California) has yet to see the "big rush" by Americans needing jobs running to take the jobs that are now open to them! Therefore, proving that Latinos are filling jobs that Americans think they are too good to do! Whoever posted the comment "funniest comment ever" I am still laughing at that one! Great response to someone that thinks they are always (W)right on everything (at least it gave him a different subject than annexation)! Way to go!!!!!!! Mr. Tomkins, we all know the benefit of cancer across the United states, no research has to be done to tell us that without finding a cure, doctors continue to line their pockets! If they could cure everything (which they can most) doctors, nurses and pharmacies would virtually be out of a job! Take AIDS for instance: they can stop it from spreading to a fetus from a mother who is infected but they can't cure the mother, does this really make sense to you since it is spread through the bloodstream? Guess someone would come up with a way to blame doctors, nurses and pharmacist's being jobless on Latinos too! Sorry, I forgot, you are the people that think all disease comes from immigrants in the first place (nothing is to EVER be blamed on Americans)! If that's what you beleive, maybe you could at least thank them for keeping the above mentioned in business! I know that's way too much to ask, I appologize.......

How Dare You : Thursday, July 24, 2008 4:32 PM

In reference to the letter about "The Bush Legacy". I will admit that I am very unhappy with President Bush's 2nd term in office. But that is "nothing", compared to your comment that "we should start learning about Asian culture and deprogramming ourselves". I have no ill feelings about Asian people or their culture. Your comments seem to exhibit a very negative attitude about "our" American culture. May I respectfully suggest, if you do not like it here, go to some other county and renounce your American citizenship!!!! America does have it's fault's, but "How Dare You Suggest", that we should model ourselves over another county/culture. William McCranie Salisbury, NC

Reason is a good thing... : Thursday, July 24, 2008 12:19 PM

Thank you to Lutrell Hancock for your reasonable commentary. The immigration issue reared its ugly head so that Americans would spend their time scapegoating Latinos instead of protesting the real issues (deficit, war, devalued dollar, etc.) My only solace is that years from now, the Latino population will be well entrenched into mainstream America. Unfortunately, another group will be getting dumped on then. Mr. Tompkins, you can't really believe UNC would fudge its research findings. That would jeopardize their credibility in all areas of research -- and their ego is way too big for that!

Lets see in 4 years : Thursday, July 24, 2008 9:33 AM

Mr/Ms. Hancock, think I will save your column and ask the Post to reissue in 4 years! You are really a HATE AMERICA, HATE BUSH DEMOCRAT. History will reveal that President Bush did the right thing in going into Iraq. Since you foresaw the 9-11 attacks, perhaps you will agree with me that the ragheads will hit us with a nuclear device within 2 years of the ascendancy of the Anti-Christ, the enviable GREAT NUBIAN PRINCE, Barack HUSSEIN OBAMA. Too, the stock market Dow will plunge to under 2000. What may I ask do you want to learn about Asian Culture that gave us the Japanese Empire, the Chinese Maoists as well as Ghengis Khan and Al Queda in Indonesia??? Please enlighten us since you appear to be one of those intellectual elites. Why don't you leftist whiners go ahead and petition Pelosi and Reid to impeach President Bush? I DARE YOU!!!!

Mr. Tompkins - there are always two sides to a coin. While the conservative rhetoric focuses on the negative impacts of illegal immigration, it is interesting to see another group highlight some of the positive impacts that many people do not consider. With both sides - you have a much more balanced view of the issue, and I applaud the Post for writing about both sides - that is called neutral and objective journalism.

Liberals have a secret crush on Bush : Thursday, July 24, 2008 6:10 AM
