Area briefs: Tennis standouts qualify

Three local tennis players qualified for the 2A Midwest Regional that begins today in Salisbury.

Salisbury senior Joe Goodman, who is 16-3, is in the singles field. He won the CCC tournament title.

Salisbury sophomore Austin Flynn and freshman Steven Page form a doubles team that reached the CCC tournament final.

- Prep softball

Stacie Raney's three-run homer in the seventh inning with Brooke Taylor and Alex Mills on base lifted West Rowan to a 7-5 victory at Central Cabarrus on Wednesday.

Pitcher Sabrina Stephens retired the last seven Central hitters and earned the win.

Morgan Peeler, a former East Rowan pitcher who has signed with N.C. State, lost for the first time this season. Central is 16-2.

West (17-3), the NPC's No. 2 seed, starts the 3A state playoffs next week on the road.

- East Spencer 3-on 3 tournament

A 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held on Saturday, May 10, at Royal Giants Park in East Spencer.

The tournament starts at 10:30 a.m. and is open to the public.

The entry fee for a team is $45. Teams need a name.

There is a cash reward and a trophy for first place.

The winner will be entered in the 3-on-3 Showdown in Atlanta this summer.

- Salisbury Kings win tourney

The Salisbury Rowan Kings 11-under boys basketball team won a YBOA tournament that will advance them to the the state championship tournament in Hickory.

Coaches are Clifford Long, Cedric Phillips, and Christopher Phillips.

Players include Ian Bradshaw, Isaiah Little, Celexus Long, Marquez McCain, Jalen Norman, Jalen Sanders, Dominique Upchurch, Keddrick Wilson, Samuel Wyrick and Seth Wyrick.

The first-year team has played in several AAU and YBOA tournaments and had the opportunity to play at Bobcats Arena.

- Middle school baseball

Erwin nipped Corriher-Lipe 4-3 behind the pitching of Alex Bost (winner) and Curtis Ward (save).

Devin Lanier collected two hits for the Eagles (10-1).

Dillon Parker had two hits for the Yellow Jackets, and Matt Miller pitched five innings.

Erwin, which plays three times next week, is in first place, but West Rowan and China Grove, which handed Erwin its only setback, are still in contention.

The surging Red Devils (8-2) beat Southeast 10-3 on Thursday behind Josh Martin's pitching. Martin, Dylan Carpenter and Connor Bridges had two hits apiece.

China Grove survived a monster night by Southeast's Andy Austin, who hit one homer over the fence and also circled the bases on an inside-the-park homer at the Carson High diamond.

Southeast is 5-6 overall and 3-6 in the Rowan County Middle School Conference.

Southeast's next game is against Corriher-Lipe on Monday.

- Intimidators rally

The Kannapolis Intimidators came from behind to beat Lakewood 4-3 on Danny Jordan's eighth-inning single on Thursday.

Kannapolis entered the eighth inning down 3-2, but Mike Grace tied the game with a single.

Henry Mabee tacked down his seventh save of the year. Reliever Santo Luis earned the win with a perfect eighth inning.

Logan Johnson went 3-for-3 , while Jordan was 3-for-4.

The teams play again tonight at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium at 7:05 p.m.

- College softball

Charlotte's Whitney Williams (Davie) went 2-for-4 in a 4-0 victory against St. Bonaventure on Thursday.

- Middle school soccer

Dinkin Miller scored three goals as West Rowan Middle's boys soccer team beat North Rowan Middle 4-0.

Berteen Salazar had the other goal for the Bulldogs.

West's girls tied North 0-0.

- Southeast's boys beat China Grove 4-2.

Adolfo Reyes, Eduardo Carrillo, Francisco Alvarez and Cristian Mendoza led a strong defensive effort for the Patriots.

Jordy Sanchez scored twice for Southeast, while Freddy Jaimes and Reyes had one goal each. Mendoza picked up two assists. Jaimes and Reyes had one helper each.

- Women's golf

Susan Morris won Thursday's Women's Golf Association tournament. Jo Shaw was second, with Jayne Hubbard third.

- College baseball

Davidson's Brett Shore (South Rowan) went 3-for-5 in a 10-5 loss to Elon on Thursday.

- Bears fall

UNC Pembroke's softball team beat Lenoir-Rhyne 4-0 and eliminated the Bears from the South Atlantic Regional on Thursday.
