Staff report
South Rowan and Randolph County completed 3 1/2 innings of their American Legion playoff game before a heavy thunderstorm wiped out play for the remainder of Wednesday night, and South held a 3-1 lead as it batted with one away and no one on base in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Game 3 is set to resume this afternoon at 4 p.m. in Landis, and Game 4 of the best-of-seven, Area III semifinal series is set to begin at the same site at 7 p.m. Both contests are scheduled as nine-inning affairs.South, which trails 2-0 in the series, scored twice in the bottom of the third inning Wednesday to break a 1-all tie. Ryan Bostian, who had reached on a single, scored on a single from Caleb Shore. Maverick Miles, who followed Bostian's hit with a single of his own, came home on Ivan Corriher's sacrifice fly off Randolph starter Tyler McSwain.South took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, when Walker Snow scored on an RBI double by Brett Huffman. Huffman went to third on an error.
Randolph tied the game in the top of the third thanks to an RBI single from Josh Hohn. Cam Cockman had singled off South starter Cam Park one at-bat earlier, and Cockman stole second base early in Hohn's at-bat.
Park allowed five hits and struck out two batters in four effective innings. Bostian, South's center fielder, made two catches with his back against the wall in the first inning.
McSwain also allowed five hits Wednesday. He retired Snow to begin the bottom half of the fourth, and Huffman was facing a 1-1 count when play was halted.
