Area briefs: Savage now at N.C. State

Area standout Lamont Savage has transferred from Lenoir-Rhyne to N.C. State and joined the Wolfpack's track and field program.

Savage competed in football and track for two years at L-R. He finished 10th in the long jump at the Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships as a freshman in the spring of 2007.

- Catawba picked second

Catawba's women's soccer team was picked second behind Lincoln Memorial in a preseason poll of SAC coaches. Carson-Newman was picked third.

Catawba midfielder Lainey Nichols, as well as defenders Alyssa Schoenberg and Nikki Blackwelder, were named to the preseason first team. Defender Alexa Baird was named to the second team.

- NPC volleyball

Taylor May had six aces and six kills to lead South Rowan to a sweep of A.L. Brown. Amber Waldroup and Sam Goins had three saves each for South. Krista Haywood had four kills and 10 assists.

*Haywood had 31 assists and six kills in a 3-1 victory over Northwest Cabarrus. Kayla Morrow had 11 kills and five digs while May had nine kills and six digs. Goins had four kills, with Waldroup and Molly Garrett adding three each.n Sarah Marshall made 22 digs, but Carson lost 25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22 to Mooresville in its first match. Breckin Settlemeyer led the Cougars in blocks and kills. The Cougars played without Taylor Whitley (ankle injury).n Molly Rhyne led North Iredell to a sweep of West Rowan, and Lake Norman swept Statesville.

- Prep tennis

North Rowan's girls tennis team remained unbeaten thanks to a 6-3 victory against Carson.

Wins by the pairings of Corbin Bennett-Diamond Jackson, Caitlin Crawford-Kelli Berry and Melinda Mitchell-Amanda Sisco enabled North (2-0) to sweep doubles. Mitchell-Sisco prevailed 12-10 .

Bennett and Courtney Cress split sets at No. 1 singles before Bennett claimed the third-set tiebreaker 7-2.Carol Brown, Kaitlyn Craft and Julie Tonnesen won singles matches for Carson. Brown pulled out a third-set tiebreaker by an 8-6 score.

- Minor League baseball

The Kannapolis Intimidators won 3-1 against visiting Augusta.

Mark Fleisher's sixth-inning single brought in first-round pick Gordon Beckham with the go-ahead run. Center fielder Jordan Danks, making his pro debut, delivered an RBI single in the seventh. He went 1-for-4, and Beckham is hitting .526 through five games.

Kannapolis starter Miguel Socolovich allowed four hits and only a first-inning run while striking out nine in six frames.

The two teams meet again today at 7:05 p.m., and it's left-hander Madison Bumgarner's turn to pitch for Augusta. Bumgarner, a South Caldwell High School alum, is a top prospect in the San Francisco Giants' organization.

- DeSanto bout details

Local boxer Dominic DeSanto (North Rowan) will fight in his second pro bout on Aug. 30 at Bette Rae Thomas Recreation Center in Charlotte.

DeSanto will face 30-year-old southpaw Jason Jorden of Akron, Ohio. They will fight as 147-pound welterweights. Jorden, who has had 32 pro fights to date, is ranked 102nd in the country.

- Local golf

Allison Lee is in seventh place overall, including sixth in the 16-18 girls division, after two rounds of the Dogwood State Junior Championship in Gastonia.

Lee is at 78-82—160 heading into today's final round.

Roy Dixon is in 25th place overall and fifth in the 14-15 boys division with a 77-75—152. Alex Nianouris just made the cut in the 14-15 division after posting a 75-84—159.

- Scholar-athletes

NCHSAA scholar-athlete awards for the highest GPA as a team for the 2008 spring semester went to South Rowan's softball team (3.916) and East Rowan's girls track team (3.730).

- Youth baseball

The China Grove Youth Baseball League will offer girls softball and fall baseball for the first time. Softball will be open to girls ages 6-13, and baseball is for 6-12, although 12-year-olds cannot pitch.

Registration forms can be picked up at Dale's Sporting Goods in China Grove. The cost is $45 for softball and $50 for baseball, and registrations will be accepted through Wednesday for both.

- East Rowan Y

The East Rowan YMCA is taking registrations for the following sports until Sept. 6. Practices begin Sept. 13, and seasons begin Sept. 27.

* Mighty Kickers Spring Soccer: an introduction to soccer for ages 3-4 n Spring Soccer: outdoor league teaching soccer principles and YMCA values for grades K-8

* Fall T-Ball: introduction to baseball for boys and girls for Pre-K-first grade

* Fall Coach Pitch: teaches basic and advanced baseball skills and YMCA values for grades 2-3n Cannon coach

Cannon School has named Erasto Hatchett as interim head varsity boys basketball coach.
